Guangdong-Macao cooperation swiftly busted a robbery case, with six mainland men apprehended
In the wee hours of 22nd May 2025, the Judiciary Police received a robbery case from the Public Security Police Force. Case details revealed that, last year, a male mainland victim borrowed HKD800,000 from the first involved mainland man to engage in illegal currency exchange activities in Macao. Subsequently, he lost all the money. Thus, in April 2025, he signed IOUs on two occasions successively in the Mainland, and promised to repay HKD900,000, including principal and interest. Since the male victim had failed to repay his debt all along, on the night of 21st May 2025, the first involved mainland man orchestrated a plan. Together with five accomplices, he carried out a robbery against the male victim.
Under the arrangement of the first involved mainland man, the second involved mainland man became acquainted with the male victim inside a casino and falsely claimed that he wanted to exchange currency. When the male victim claimed that he had lost all the money he had with him, the second involved mainland man then changed approach and invited him to the hotel room where the crime took place to exchange gambling tactics. The unwary male victim called his wife to bring money and meet him in the room. After the two victims followed the second involved mainland man into the room, they found that, five involved men, including the first involved mainland man, were already at the scene, awaiting them. The six men assaulted the two victims without giving them a chance to explain. During the attack, they held the male victim at knifepoint with a dining knife and ransacked both of their valuables. After robbing HKD160,620 in cash, gold jewellery valued at RMB30,000, bank cards and identification documents, the first and second involved mainland men, along with one of their accomplices fled immediately. Later, three other involved men also dashed from the scene together. The two victims chased the three suspects to the hotel lobby. With the assistance of the hotel security officers, they successfully intercepted the trio and reported the case to the police for assistance.
The Robbery Offences Section of the Judiciary Police immediately launched an investigation, and seized HKD6,000 from one of the involved mainland men. Meanwhile, three involved men at large were identified. It was also learnt from investigation that, they had fled Macao via the Hengqin Port after committing the crime. The incident was immediately reported to the Mainland Police via the police liaison mechanism, requesting assistance. On 22nd May 2025, at noon, the Judiciary Police was informed by the Mainland Police that, the three involved men at large had all been apprehended in the Mainland.
Based on investigative findings, the Judiciary Police transferred the three involved mainland men who had been arrested in Macao to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offence of robbery, while continuing to track down the whereabouts of the remaining ill-gotten gains and booty. Furthermore, as there were indications that someone was suspected of engaging in illegal currency exchange activities in Macao, the Judiciary Police established a separate case file for investigation.
This case was successfully busted, and the perpetrators who were present in the Mainland China were apprehended within 13 hours of the report, fully demonstrating the smooth and effective cooperation mechanism of the Guangdong-Macao police. It also highlighted the determination and capability of both police forces to cooperate in combatting cross-border crime and jointly safeguarding public security.
