Beware of Employment Traps

Beware of Employment Traps

        Stay alert

        Whether you apply for a job through recruitment advertisements or recommendations of others, always find out the background of the company in advance to ascertain         if it is reliable ;

        Personal safety should always come first when going for interviews - avoid going to deserted place at night for interview. Tell your family where you are going and find a         friend to go with you when necessary ;

        Under no circumstances should you reveal your personal information to anyone, especially information that is unnecessary for the job application, including bank                 account numbers, credit card numbers and passwords. Be extra cautious when filling in online application forms ;

        Ask for their reasons if you are required to pay upfront fees at a job interview. Assess the situation and decide whether the fees are necessary or excessive ;

        Most companies do not require job applicants to pay advance fees. However, if you encounter such a situation, do not pay them. Excuse yourself with not having                  enough money or credit card and leave. Discuss the matter with your family and friends afterwards ;

        Do not readily agree and make payment when you are urged to buy the company's product or you are persuaded to make an investment on the spot.

       Be realistic

        Don't let greed blind you. Remember there is no such thing as a free lunch. Be practical when applying for jobs. Exclude any thoughts of "quick money" ;

        Think clearly if there is really any easy job that offers attractive salary but requires no qualification and experience ?

        Consider the credibility of recruitment advertisements that state high salary but low requirements

       Examine the terms and conditions on the contract carefully

         Read the content of the contract carefully before signing, including supplementary conditions and the employee handbook ;

         Study the contract with care. Be wary if you see any item asking for payments ;

         Do not sign the contract in haste if you come across anything unclear. Ask the company to explain the details.

        Job nature

        After reporting for duty, check if the scope of duties matches the description in the advertisement or the interview. Quit the job if there is anything unusual ;

        Think carefully if you are persuaded to make any investments or purchase products for selling ;

        Say no firmly if you are required to do anything illegal. If you commit any criminal offence, it may leave you with a criminal record and your future will be adversely                  affected.

        Seek assistance

        Keep yourself updated of current affairs and the scam tactics of culprits ;

        Fully understand the rights and interests of employees before taking up any job ;

        Always consult your family members, teachers or friends if you are in doubt or unsure of a situation.Assistance from the Police should be sought if and when necessary         (e.g. discovery of unlawful acts in your job)
